Risks associated with Surgery for Nasal Polyps |
|
|
| |
Surgery is mainly performed for short term relief from breathing conditions.
Possible risks associated with Sinus Surgery include:
- Infections, headaches, numbness, bruising and inflammation due to the Anaestatic used during the surgery (anesthesia risks).
- After undergoing the Caldwell-Luc procedure your face may swell. This swelling should only last for a few days. There is also the risk of cheek tingling and numbness which usually lasts for a few weeks or in severe cases, could be permanent.
- Eye damage (blindness or double vision) and persistent numbness in the forehead region is more likely to occur in Open frontal Sinus surgery than in Endoscopic sinus surgery.
- Decreased sense of smell after surgery.
- Bleeding may occur during surgery. If there is profuse bleeding during the actual sinus surgery, the doctor may have to stop the surgery.
Bleeding of the nose or of the healing injured tissues after the surgery is also common.
- Nasal polyps may recur after surgery. Recurrence is common after surgery and more surgeries may be necessary in the future. Approximately 50% of people who have had nasal polyp surgery experience a re-growth of their nasal polyps.

Risks associated with the use of medicine to treat Nasal Polyps |
|
|
| |
One may use nasal sprays and topical corticosteroids to treat Nasal Polyps, however over-usage may lead to unwanted side effects such as:
- Nose bleeds
- Headaches
- A sore throat
- Rebound congestion is caused by the over usage of nasal sprays containing steroids. Nasal sprays cause drying out of the mucus initially; however the bodies natural reaction to this drying out is to produce more mucus, leaving you worst off then when you started.
