What are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are small sac-like growths that develop from inflamed/swollen mucus membranes. Nasal polyps are non-cancerous and do not spread.

Nasal polyps can form at the base of the nose, in both right and left nasal passages and in one or more of your sinus cavities.

When nasal polyps develop in the middle meatus (groove like passage in sinuses), they can cause blockages and difficulties in breathing.

Nasal polyps can also be found on the lateral walls of the sinus cavities. If one has a deviated septum, nasal polyps are more likely to form on the sinus walls then on the septum itself.

Although rare, nasal polyps can also extend through a choana. Choana are openings that connect the nasal passages to the back of the throat.
